How do I know if I have vitiligo?

Vitiligo presents as white patches on your skin. The signs maybe subtle at first, however as time progress the contrast will be more obvious. The most commonly areas affected include the face, especially around the eyelids and mouth, and other areas of the body including the hands, feet, and general areas. Vitiligo commonly affects the genital areas.

Most cases of vitiligo can be treated, with re-pigmentation plans.
Are special tests needed to diagnose vitiligo?
In the majority of cases, no special tests are needed to make the diagnosis of vitiligo, however in some cases, such as early vitiligo, the signs are subtle, and a skin biopsy may help. In cases where an infection such as a fungus or yeast is involved, a simple skin scarping may help.

Vitiligo can be associated with other autoimmune skin conditions, such as diabetes, thyroid disease and lupus. Blood tests can detect any associated conditions, including any vitamin deficiencies. The majority of these conditions can be managed with appropriate medical treatment.
What types of vitiligo ?
Vitiligo has many types or forms, and each type will carry a different prognosis.
For example;
Symmetrical vitiligo on the face carries a good prognosis.
Generalised or wide-spread vitiligo carries a poorer prognosis, even with our re-colouring programs.
Acral vitiligo involves the hands and feet, and also carries a poorer chance of re-pigmentation compared to facial vitiligo.
Segmental vitiligo is very rare and occurs in children. Repigmentation is extremely uncommon in this form of vitiligo, as there are no melanocytes in the white patches.

Our vitiligo experts will identify your type of vitiligo and deliver a tailored treatment plan.
